Picture 1 of 7

Photograph of carved sandstone architecture at Petra, the archeological site in Jordan built by the Nabateans as their capital circa 100 BCE. Discovered by Europeans in 1812, Petra was named a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1985. The site is in the Arabah of the Dead Sea on the slope of Mt. Hor. The monumental classical architecture façade is called Al Khazneh aka the Treasury, hewn in a sandstone clift. Most visitors approach Al Khazneh through a narrow natural gorge called the Siq. Photograph by Nathan Benn taken November 13, 1974.
